Onan Generator Fault Code 32

Onan Fault Code 32 indicates a 'crank but no start' condition where the generator control board successfully engages the starter motor, the engine cranks normally, but the engine fails to ignite and run. This fault code is displayed as three flashes, then two flashes on the control panel LED. Fault 32 almost always points to ignition system failures, fuel delivery issues, or mechanical problems preventing combustion.

Ignition System Failures

For the engine to start, it needs spark at the right time. Onan generators use either traditional magneto ignition or electronic ignition modules. If the spark plug is fouled, the ignition coil has failed, or the control module isn't triggering spark, the engine will crank endlessly but never fire. A technician will first check for spark by grounding the spark plug against the engine block and cranking—if no bright blue spark appears, the ignition system is at fault. Common ignition-related causes include carbon-fouled spark plugs from infrequent use, cracked spark plug wires, or a failed ignition module. Replacing the spark plug is an easy first step—use the manufacturer-specified plug and gap it correctly. If spark is still absent, deeper diagnostics of the ignition module and coil are needed.

Fuel Delivery to the Carburetor

Even with good spark, the engine won't start without fuel. If the fuel pump isn't running (on models with electric pumps), the fuel line is blocked, or the carburetor is empty due to long-term storage, you'll get crank but no start. A quick test is to remove the air filter and spray a small amount of starting fluid into the intake—if the engine fires briefly and then dies, you've confirmed a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel shut-off valve (if equipped)—sometimes these are accidentally left closed. Inspect the fuel lines for kinks or collapse. If the generator has been sitting unused for months, the carburetor bowl may be empty and require several cranking cycles to refill, or it may need cleaning if fuel has varnished inside.

Control Board and Safety Shutdowns

The Onan control board monitors several safety interlocks: oil pressure (on models with oil pressure switches), RPM sensing, and ignition confirmation. If the control board thinks oil pressure is missing (even if it's actually fine), it may allow cranking but cut ignition to prevent engine damage. Similarly, if the Hall effect sensor or magnetic pickup that senses RPM position is failed, the board won't trigger ignition. A technician will check for stored fault codes beyond just Fault 32, inspect wiring to safety sensors, and test sensor continuity. Sometimes corrosion on sensor connectors causes intermittent faults that prevent starting.

Mechanical Issues (Valve Timing and Compression)

In rare cases, Fault 32 appears due to mechanical failure inside the engine—such as a slipped timing chain, stuck valves, or loss of compression. If the engine cranks but sounds 'different' (too fast, too easy, or with unusual noises), internal damage may be present. A compression test will reveal if the engine has lost the ability to build pressure for combustion. This is uncommon but can happen after severe overheating, prolonged low-oil operation, or if the generator hasn't been run for several years and has experienced valve sticking or rust in the cylinder.
