Cracked or Peeling RV Roof Sealant

Cracked sealant is the #1 cause of RV water damage. RV roofs use a self-leveling lap sealant that dries out and cracks over time due to sun exposure and vibration.

Inspection Routine

You should be on your roof (or hire someone) 2-4 times a year to inspect every seam. Look for cracks, bubbling, peeling, or gaps where the sealant has pulled away from the vent or roof material.

Proper Repair Method

Do not just pile more caulk on top of dirt. The old sealant must be cleaned with a compatible cleaner (denatured alcohol or specific roof cleaner) before applying new self-leveling sealant. For silicone-based systems, only silicone can be used.

💡 Prevention Tips

  • Inspect roof sealants every 90 days.
  • Store RV under cover when possible to extend sealant life.
