How RV Awning Mechanisms Work
Discover the spring-loaded or motorized systems that extend and retract awnings, and what keeps them operating safely.
Awnings provide shade and comfort but are easily damaged by wind. Understanding the tension mechanisms helps in safe operation.
Manual vs. Electric
Manual awnings use a spring-loaded roller tube and require a specific sequence of flipping levers to roll out. Electric awnings use a motor and are just a button press, but have less tie-down capability.
Wind Sensors
Some high-end electric awnings have sensors that automatically retract the awning if it detects too much motion from wind. Never rely on this 100%—gusts can happen faster than motors can retract.
Fabric Care
Awning fabric (vinyl or acrylic) can mildew if rolled up wet. It needs to be dried out. UV rays degrade the fabric over time, leading to tears at the roller tube.
Important Notes
- •Always tilt one corner of the awning to allow rain runoff
- •Retract awnings whenever leaving the campsite or going to bed
- •Lock manual awning arms securely before travel
