How RV Holding Tank Systems Work
Understanding fresh, gray, and black water tank construction, capacity, venting, and proper management to prevent system failures and odors.
A duplicate entry often used to cover specific holding tank mechanics in depth. It reiterates the importance of the waste management system.
Gate Valves
The blade valves that open/close the tanks are simple but prone to sticking or leaking. Keeping the tracks lubricated (using tank lubricants) extends their life.
The 'Stinky Slinky'
Your sewer hose connects the RV to the dump station. Bayonet fittings must be secure to prevent messy accidents. Supports (slunkies) help maintain a downhill slope for drainage.
Black Tank Flush
Many RVs have a sprayer inside the black tank. Connecting a hose (never your fresh water hose!) to the flush port sprays the inside walls to knock down solids and clean sensors.
Important Notes
- •Keep valves closed when hooked up until ready to dump
- •Use clear elbow connectors to see when water runs clear
- •Replace valve seals if they start dripping
