How RV Propane Systems Work
A high-level overview of how propane flows from tanks to appliances through regulators and lines - understanding the system safely.
Propane (LP) powers your stove, furnace, water heater, and fridge. It's efficient but requires respect and safety awareness.
The Regulator
The heart of the system is the two-stage regulator at the tanks. It reduces the high tank pressure to a low, consistent pressure (11 inches water column) safe for appliances. If it fails, appliances won't light or flames will be erratic.
Safety Detectors
Every RV has an LP leak detector near the floor (propane is heavier than air). If it beeps, shut off the gas immediately and ventilate. Never disable this safety device.
Automatic Changeover
Dual-tank setups often have an auto-changeover regulator. It draws from one tank until empty, then switches to the other, showing a red indicator so you know to refill the empty one.
Important Notes
- •Turn off propane tanks while driving (unless appliances are designed for it and laws permit)
- •Leak test connections with soapy water annually
- •Propane smells like rotten eggs—know the scent
